Last week Scandic Sourcing visited the international fairs Hotelex and Expo Finefood and some smaller, concurring exhibitions such as Coffee &Tea China Shanghai at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. All of the 18 big halls and the outside space were filled with over 2.000 exhibitors, displaying food and beverage products and all kind of hotel related equipment and services along with live cooking and barrista competitions. Many foreign and international companies were represented at the fair, some together with or by help from their Chinese distributors or agents. A lot of Chinese companies were also exhibiting their products, some big brands but also many small producers occupying the smaller booths in the back of the halls.
At this year's fair we noticed a big focus on and interest for coffee. It was noticable that there was basically no instant coffee but more a focus on quality coffee like espresso and drip coffee and variant of capsule coffee. A representative of an international producer of coffee roasting machines that we talked to at the fair said that the demand from the Chinese coffee roasters are increasing rapidly. According to Euromonitor the Chinese consumers continued to demand quality coffee both in and out of the home last year.
