RoHS 2.0 Background:

In July 2006, the European Union issued a directive banning certain materials being used in a range of consumer electronic products, in order to lessen the toxicity of electronic waste. This directive was called RoHS, or the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive.

The materials banned by law in all European member countries are:

1. Lead (Pb)
2. Mercury (Hg)
3. Cadmium (Cd)
4. Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+)
5. Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
6. Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)

According to the directive, these materials could not exceed 1/10 of 1% of the entire weight of a number of electronic consumer products. For example, if your product weights 1,000 pounds, you cannot have more then 1 pound of lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, and RoHS fire retardants in your product. Manufactures of products, are not required to "prove" that their products meet the new RoHS law, but they are required to make "self-declarations" that their product does meet or exceed RoHS legislation.

The products affected by RoHS are household items such as:

1. Large and small household appliances such as: microwaves, frying pans, refrigerators, coffee machines.
2. Computer and telephone equipment, such as laptops, keyboards, fax machines, telephones
3. Light bulbs
4. Tools
5. Electronic entertainment items

In January 2, 2013, a new directive, RoHS 2.0 took effect to also include a range of medical devices as well as industrial monitoring equipment.

The new RoHs 2.0 directive is also applying to medical equipment in addition to consumer electronics.
